Prop. 49 Readiness Conference
Proposition 49 -- which voters passed in 2002 to provide after-school
programs for California elementary and middle schools -- will be funded this
year for the first time. Under pending legislation, high schools might be
included, too.
The program will more than quadruple funding for after-school programs in
California, from $121 million to $550 million. Its implementation brings a whole
new set of challenges for those in the community -- from leaders in education
and local government, to individual schools, to after-school program providers.
But the program also presents an opportunity to collaborate in enhancing
students’ education and quality of life.
To help everyone sort through the complexities of Proposition 49, the Santa
Clara County Office of Education, in partnership with Region V Healthy Start and
Afterschool Partnerships, is presenting a Proposition 49 Readiness Conference
on April 3. This one-time, collaborative event will bring together stakeholders
to:
- Learn about the proposition, its funding requirements, program structure
and expected outcomes;
- Understand their role and responsibilities as a service provider or LEA;
- Answer questions on the RFP;
- Enable existing and new partners to network and strategize.
Some aspects of the proposition could be affected by two bills pending in the
Legislature. While the timeline and fate of these bills are uncertain, we hope
the conference will help clarify their possible repercussions, as well as shed
light on many other details of Proposition 49.
Please mark your calendars for April 3 from 9 a.m. to noon at SCCOE,
1290 Ridder Park Dr., San Jose, in the San Jose Room, for this important event. RSVP
by March 29 to Steve Berta, (408) 453-6982, Steve_Berta@SCCOE.org.
