2006 Constitution Day

Educational institutions receiving funds from the U.S. Department of
Education are required to have an educational program about the U.S.
Constitution. The program is to be provided on Constitution Day--Sept. 17 of
each year, commemorating the Sept. 17, 1787 signing of the Constitution. When
Sept. 17 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, Constitution Day can be held during the
preceding or following week.
The Santa Clara County Office of Education has assembled lessons and
resources to help schools fulfill this requirement. Each of the lessons requires
little preparation from a classroom teacher. There are lessons for elementary,
middle, and high schools. These lessons are for educational purposes and not
intended to persuade students of a particular political point of view.

Issues such as student rights, civil liberties and freedom of speech come up
often in children’s lives. The future of our democracy depends on a
well-educated citizenry, both today and tomorrow.
