The Seal of Biliteracy
Charles Weis, Ph. D.
November 2010
At the Santa Clara County Office of Education, we are committed to the notion that our schools must give students the skills and the means necessary to be successful citizens and workers in the 21st Century workplace.
The ability to speak, read and write two or more languages is increasingly becoming a key factor in workplace success. Citizens of the global economy need language skills and cultural awareness in order to thrive in a multicultural, multilingual, and globally connected world. This rings especially true here in Silicon Valley, with its rich diversity in language and culture. It is no accident that employees perform work here that ripples all across the globe.
The County Office’s Education Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to graduating seniors in county school districts who have mastered standard academic English and any other language. Students who wish to receive the seal must submit an application and meet four eligibility requirements.
We congratulate those students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy, knowing they are about to make their way in the world bolstered by an essential tool for success.
