SCCOE Community Support Program

If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day, go fishing.
If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.

- Chinese proverb

Mission
The mission of the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) is to be a champion for children, schools, and the community. In keeping with our mission, the Office is committed to social responsibility in all its education, business, and community activities.

Community Support Objectives

  • To support select charitable organizations that have clear educational value or overall benefit to the community
  • To encourage staff to volunteer, support, and participate in charitable activities

Community Support Criteria
Community support priorities are based on standards of clear educational value and/or overall benefit to the community and the Office. (Reference: Board Policy 2520, Staff Fund Raising and Charity Drives)

Community Support Organizations
The SCCOE currently supports three community charitable organizations. The Office chose to support these organizations because they support basic human needs, support excellence in teaching, primarily affect students and their families, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Charitable Organizations:

1. Family Giving Tree Back-to-School Drive: SCCOE staff collect funds through book fairs (held four times per year) at the central office to purchase backpacks and school supplies.

2. Second Harvest Food Bank: Second Harvest Food Bank is a private non-profit organization that collects and distributes more than 26 million pounds of food each year to low-income children, adults and seniors. The Food Bank currently serves an average of 167,200 individuals each month; nearly 60% are families with dependent children. Each holiday season, SCCOE staff donate non-perishable food items in food barrels located throughout various SCCOE sites.

3. United Way Silicon Valley: The centerpiece of our community support program is the United Way. By working through the United Way, we are able to join other agencies to help local groups solve local problems. United Way Silicon Valley represents over 100 agencies and collaboratives providing services for children and seniors. The SCCOE conducts a United Way campaign annually.

Other Community Support Activities
On a personal volunteer basis, staff may participate in activities for other charitable organizations not listed above on their own time. However, these activities are not officially supported by the Office and as such will not have access to Office or staff resources.

Community Support Committee Composition
The SCCOE Community Support Committee, comprised of SCCOE staff, facilitates and internally organizes activities and events in support of the three organizations listed under 'charitable organizations.'
